Abstract:
The Poem La Vénusalgie by Jean François Sacombe is a didactic and also an artistic source
of reference for the specialists interested in the disease of syphilis and of its psychological
implications. The degradation of body of those suffering from syphilis is also associated
with a degenerescence of the psychic, which is recorded in numerous verses of the poem.
In the hundreds of pages dedicated to the description, the pathology and therapy of this
disease, the physician writer, by his talent, succeeds to give an esthetic connotation to the
evil and the destructive effects of the contamination with the venereal scourge. The lancet
and the pen are the favored instruments used by Sacombe, a surgeon and clinician and a
writer of verse, making them symbols of the accuracy of his knowledge in the domain of
medicine, and, at the same time, a proof of his passion for the artistic beauty.
