Abstract:

Approximately 50 – 74 % of the patients that receive antipsychotics present extrapyramidal secondary effects (ESP). The extrapyramidal secondary effects are caused by the excessive blockade r.D2. They represent an important indicator of reducing the neuroprotection, significantly correlated with chronic deficient evolution. ESP also represents a major cause of therapeutic compliance reduction. The atypical antipsychotics associate with a reduced risk of ESP towards the typical ones, due to the effects over other neurotransmitters. The ESP risk differs according to the atypical antipsychotic administered, the dose and the patient’s vulnerability.
