By a content analysis of two local newspapers articles, from 2000 to August 2014, I intend
to identify the basic structure of the main messages related to autism from the press. In
the newspapers that I analyzed, there is a greater focus on aspects of resilience, namely:
awareness, charity events to raise funds for the development of services or therapies,
lobby for the rights of children with autism, conducting scientific events, such as training
courses, conferences, book launches, etc. From this research, at least two important conclusions
emerge. First, the press contribute to stimulate positive thinking presenting effective
solutions to improve the quality of life of children with autism spectrum disorders
and their families. Second, parents’ associations are factors of resilience that helps overcoming
adversity encountered in most families with a child with autism.
