Abstract:
The alcoholic withdrawal is associated with a significant morbidity and mortality when improperly
managed. All patients need general support; a certain percentage of them need a pharmacology
that changes the evolution of the inversion of the neural adaptation induced by alcohol.
Benzodiazepines are acknowledged as the elected treatment of alcohol withdrawal. They are
cross tolerant with the alcohol and possess anticonvulsant properties. There still are a number of
patients for whom the treatment with benzodiazepines is not appropriate due to their side effects.
This is why the object of this study is the treatment of delirium tremens with benzodiazepines
versus the treatment with Tiapridal (free of the side effects of benzodiazepines).
The method used comprises the study of 100 patients suffering from delirium tremens who were
treated as follows: 50 patients with Tiapridal and 50 patients with Diazepam. They were monitored 7 days.
Results: The Tiapridal is more effective in its action of sedation regarding the other analyzed items.
There are no significant differences from the statistic point of view (this may also be due to the small
number of patients in the study).
To conclude, the side effects are the ones that recommend the treatment with Tiapridal on certain
categories of patients: patients with respiratory depression, patients with a hepatic disorder, patients who
are benzodiazepine dependent, patients with nausea and vomiting.
