Abstract:

Catatonia – a potentially life-threatening condition – is a topic insufficiently researched thus far, comprising numerous open matters regarding both the positive and differential diagnosis algorithm, and the therapeutic approach. The fundamental issue at stake is not the place occupied by catatonia in the DSM, but the lack of concept clarity. The aim of this paper is to synthesize the current scientific literature concerning the facets of catatonia as nosological entity, in order to provide premises for future research.
