Objectives:
Epidemiological studies reveal that a 1—2% prevalence of bipolar disorder doesn’t reflect the reality
becaLise:
- many patients don’t appeal to psychiatric services;
- the researches are not done on a unitary methodology;
- many studies are performed only on questionnaires without a complete clinical assessment.
This condition determined me to verify the prevalence of bipolar disorder from Alba County. In
the same time, I followed the socio-economic aspects and the life quality of bipolar patients.
Method:
At the base of preset work, there is the study made during four years (2003—2006), over a
number of 341 patients with bipolar disorders, which were hospitalized in Alba-lu lia Psychiatric Section. The diagnose was made on the I.C.D.-X (1992) and D.S.M.-lV-TR (2000) criteria, using, at the same time, a questionnaire with principal socio-demographic variables and issues concerning the onset and the evolLition of bipolar disorders.
Results:
During the study (2003—2006), there were hospitalised 341 patients with bipolar disorders,
which means 7,50% from entire number of patients.
The repartition of clinical types was: type I — 56,59%, type Il — 27,56%, type with rapid cycling
— 1 5,85%. The prevalence of bipolar disorder at the general population from Alba County takes down
to 0,89%n.
Conclusions:
Psychiatric literature estimates that life expectation for mood disorders is 8—20°f, meanwhile for
bipolar disorders it is 1—2%. For an early diagnose of bipolar disorders it would be useful to appeal to
a standardized screening program and the epidemiological studies to be done after a unitary methodology.
