Abstract:
In this paper, the authors analyze death from both a medical and theological perspective, pointing out the convergent and divergent opinions of the two approaches. More specifically, the authors tackle death as a suicidal gesture and conclude that religious morality should be more tolerant of people resorting to suicide, as the latter need to find in religion an adequate moral support in their attempts to overcome their existential crisis. Our paper actually particularizes a set of theoretic ideas by inserting different opinions emerging from interviews conducted between July 2011 and August 2012 with psychiatrists and patients suffering from diabetes mellitus and mental disorders (depression, schizophrenia), on the one hand, and with priests involved in the spiritual care of chronic patients, on the other hand.
