Abstract:
Background: Depression is the most frequent mental disorder and one of the top reasons for medical visit. Sexual dysfunction is a frequent event in depressed patients and different factors associated with depression could explain sexual impairment. It seems that different phases of sexual act could be impaired and the severity of the dysfunction varies between studies. In the present study, we report preliminary data of a comparative study that investigates sexual function in depressed patients compared with a healthy control group.
Materials and method: 18 depressed patients recruited from “Socola” Hospital of Psychiatry met inclusion criteria for the study. From each patient, demographic data was collected and Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale (ASEX), Sexual Health Inventory for Men (SHIM) and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression Scale (HAMD) were applied.
Results: Patients with depression obtained lower scores in SHIM scale, respectively higher scores in ASEX scale compared with the control group, indicating impairment in sexual function. Statistical significance is reported for all the items and total score of the ASEX scale concerning differences between patients and control group, as well as for the correlation between ASEX total scores and HAMD scores in depressed patients.
Discussions and conclusions: Depressed patients showed a greater sexual impairment compared with the normal control group and the intensity of depressive symptoms correlates with the severity of sexual impairment. Also, sex drive was reported as being the most affected in depressed patients. A larger number of patients is necessary in order to confirm the results.
