The multidimensional negative symptom domain of schizophrenia remains one of the most challenging aspects of the treatment of this disorder. While mixed findings suggest a role for secondgeneration antipsychotics, the development of novel therapeutic approaches that target cognitive impairments and negative symptoms are being actively pursued. Until newer agents become available, clinicians should seek to optimize treatment of positive symptoms and depressive symptoms, and reduce medication side effects that may contribute to negative symptom severity, and increase the use of established behavioural approaches, such as social skills training, that have been demonstrated to improve psychosocial functioning. In this article we tried a review of the most recent findings and approaches of the pharmacological therapy for schizophrenia.
