The old beliefs regarding the function of personal memory have an important role in maintaining
an acceptable level of mnesic performances for the aged. In order to denominate these beliefs, the
psychologists use the term of mnesic self-sufficiency, which represents an own evaluation of the
capacities for the adequately use of the memory in different contexts. The mnesic self-sufficiency is a
dimension of the metamemory and according to the research in the area of gerontopsychology, this
represents a predictor of the real mnesic decline. The variables which have a direct impact on the
perceived self-sufficiency of the memory are, as follows: depression, the old age stereotypes, selfesteem,
physical activity, health, level of studies, background and age. This study is only going to
analyze depression, the stereotypes regarding the ageing process and the self-esteem. In discussing
depression, it is necessary to point out that certain life events and situations indubitably favour the
manifestation of depressive episodes at the aged persons, which implies a low level of mnesic selfsufficiency.
The stereotypes regarding the ageing process and self-esteem also are not favourising
factors of mnesic self-sufficiency.
