Abstract:
Recent ethno-pharmacological studies pointed to several remarkable experimental results,
both in vivo and in vitro, achieved by testing the active potential of Chrysanthellum
extracts, but, until present day, no associative study was made in order to correlate their
actions with the neuropsychiatric diseases therapies. Chrysanthellum genus is consisted
in Asteraceae family plants, which are widely used in traditional medicine as remedy for
liver of circulatory system disorders. This is due to an impressive content in active compounds
such as flavonoids, saponins and amino acids. These were showed to exhibit antioxidant,
surfactant, and modulatory potentials, respectively, in several key metabolic
mechanisms. More than that, it seems that these extracts can also exhibit neurological
activities (correlated with a decrease in neuronal oxidative stress damage and in epileptic
seizures effects), and cholinergic system modulatory potential. Therefore, Chrysanthellum sp. can be considered an important source of ethno-pharmacologically active compounds
which can be used in neuropsychiatric disorders treatment.
