Introduction. Compared with other psychiatric disorders, which are involved in committing
criminal acts, mood disorders are less violent. Thus, neither the number nor the severity of their criminal
activities are only rarely excessive.
Method. The study is held back on statistical population of patients discharged from “Padureni”
Psychiatric Hospital and for Safety Measures, Iasi County, from 1999 to 2009. The population was
sampled on three nosological groups. The sample of persons diagnosed by the commission of forensic
psychiatric expertise with a mental disorder classified in ICD-10 group “mood disorder” was statistically
processed using Excel and statistical programs.
Results. Only 8.49% of the 412 offenders had mood disorders, with an average age of 40.89
years, men in rural areas representing 45.71% of the sample.
Approximately two thirds of them (65.71%) had a psychopathic personality structure and only 11,
43%, all being men, have a job, the rest are unemployed or with various forms of welfare or retired. We
have noticed crime rates higher for women of 21 – 30 years, from the rural area who do not have personality
disorders. Much of the violence (74.29%) was not reflected on the physical integrity of persons
being objective.
More than half of criminals affected (51.25%) were male (30.3% in urban areas and 21.2%) who
were drunk when committing the crime. Also more than half of criminals affected (34.29% males and
17.14% women) are married and have a family support that fosters recovery and social reintegration
and family decrease the risk of violent recidivism.
We found a direct correlation between a history of violence (54.29%) and alcohol involvement in
producing the current offense (54.29%). At people with a history of violence (51.43%) a discontinuous
treatment, correlates with length of hospital stay of 1 – 5 years (54.29%). It was emphasized a higher
instinctual motivation (31.43%) male in group age of 31 – 40 years, especially at men, unemployed
(25.71%) and pensioners (31.43%). Alcohol is heavily involved in committing acts (48.57%). Conclusions:
Offenders with emotional disorders are in less social and family support which allows a better
recovery and rehabilitation. The criminal offenses are rarely directed against the person, being committed
under the influence of alcohol, have an instinctual motivation and less-delirious hallucinations. Therapeutic
discontinuity and lack of occupation are heavily involved in criminal behaviour development.
