Abstract:

Nowadays, the information became very accessible to anyone. Social media delivers authorized or less authorized data to the population that became overwhelmed with new knowledge about symptoms of dangerous diseases, new ways of treatment and medical innovations. There are people susceptible to those pieces of information and they can misunderstand the real meaning of the health problems. In this context, some persons start asking themselves if they have a disturbance, without thinking if the symptoms are real or not. Other people already have a disease and tend to exaggerate the problem. Somatization and hypochondriasis are rather common in health care. A big concern in this pathology is the economic impact, because the patients are first ad-dressing to primary care system and benefit of many investigations before being diagnosed with somatization or hypochondriacal disorder. There is also an impact in social life because somatoform disorders have a direct impact on ability to work, management of home and private leisure activities and ability to form and maintain close relationship with others. Often, the somatoform disorders are associated with other psychiatric conditions as depression or anxiety; this fact, burden the disease management, evolution and prognosis. This case series brings into attention the necessity of recognizing hypochondriacal symptoms in depressive and anxiety disorders.
