Abstract:
Until mid-19th century, charitable assis-tance of mental patients on the Romanian territory was provided in sketes and mon-asteries, just like in the rest of Europe. In Moldavia, the most renowned such places were the monasteries of Neamt and Golia, where “institutions for insane persons” functioned. Post 1866, they passed under the administrative jurisdiction of St. Spiridon Iasi.
