Abstract:
Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of
life and is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting
development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills.
Studies suggest that many children eventually may be accurately identified by the age of 1 year
or even younger. The appearance of any of the warning signs of autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) is a
reason to have the child evaluated by a professional specializing in these disorders. Parents are usually
the first to notice unusual behaviors in their child. In some cases, the baby seemed “different” from
birth, unresponsive to people or focusing intently on one item for long periods of time.
The purpose of this study is to understand better how the mental status of patients with autistic
disorder evolves after therapeutic intervention: family counseling, psychopharmacology therapy, psychotherapeutic
intervention. Patients were admitted in the Psychiatric Hospital “Socola”, during 2007
– 2009. All observation sheets from that period were retrospectively analysed; we kept for study 450
cases who met the DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria for autistic disorder.
