Abstract:
In the past 20 years, the number of depressive episodes in teenagers has increased dramatically
so that it can be considered a public health problem. Depression is a common condition among
teenagers, with prevalence between 3% and 8%. Around the age of 18 years, more than 25% of
patients had at least one depressive episode.
This is a retrospective study, assessing suicide attempts of adolescents registered for a period of
three years (2006 – 2008) and was carried out at the Emergency Hospital "St. John" lasi. Of these, only
one case was diagnosed with depression and drug therapy associated with psychotherapy and was
instituted. The other 15 cases are under the observation of family and family physicians. The study
group consisted of 16 teenagers aged between 14 and 18 years. Apparently, males resorted more
easily to suicide methods, even compared to the ratio girls: boys = 1,5:1 in the general population.
Teenagers in rural areas accounted for only 13% of attempted suicide cases because they face less risk
factors connected to depression and suicidal ideation compared to urban teenagers. There is a
progressive increase in the number of cases from lower age groups to older age groups. The study is
the first published research comparing the risks of suicide attempts before and after treatment. In this
suicide study attempts were twice as common in teenagers than in adults patients. Still, a time model
is contained in both age groups: an attempted suicide most likely occurred before treatment, the
chances decreases by 50% after starting the treatment and after treatment disappeared almost entirely.
