Abstract:
Pregnancy or the birth of a baby is an overwhelming external stressor that can precipitate feelings
of hopelessness and self-harm thoughts. Although suicide and parasuicide are reported to be low
in postpartum women, suicide is the leading cause of maternal death. Presence of psychiatric disorders,
especially major depression, increase the risk of both suicide and self-harm. Psychiatric morbidity
can be predicted and prevented.
