Abstract:
This paper presents the case of a 55-year-old patient without associated somatic pathology,
who came to the ER room of the Psychiatry Clinic for acute psychotic symptomatology,
including irritability, irascibility, and overlapping impulsive/explosive manifestations,
accompanied by elements of grandeur, with sudden onset and rapid evolution, in
the apparent context of excessive use of caffeine-containing energy drinks. The data collected
during the psychiatric examination corroborated with the information provided by
the family, with para-clinical examinations, and with the anamnesis launched a diagnostic
dilemma. This dilemma was between a psychotic disorder induced by caffeine-containing
energy drinks and a manic episode with psychotic symptoms, part of a bipolar disorder
with a rather masked and clinical evolution unattested medically, with symptomatology
augmented precisely by the abuse of caffeine-containing energy drinks.
